Minutes
The second management collective meeting in two weeks was attended by Mark Alwast, Adele Morrison (facilitator), Nat Keene, Dioni Salas, Cedar Newton, Greg Carman, and Sam Wilson (minutes). As usual, we had a great deal of yummy food and so didn't get grumpy.
Matters Arising
From last week's minutes:
- A couple of clarifications and corrections (see history of last week's minutes on the wiki).
- We have approached David Lamont (of the ANU Exchange) regarding the extra money that we owe for environmentally-friendly building supplies.
- Minutes approved (after above corrections).
Grant Updates
- Volunteer Equipment: We have been awarded $2900 to buy Point-Of-Sale equipment, specifically a bar-code scanner, scales and till (or only two of these, depending on how much they cost). We will send out an email to the membership to see if anyone has POS experience and would be willing to help; the same email will announce this grant. Thanks be to Glenda and Mark for preparing the application (building on Greg's initial work on this).
- Nutrition ACT: Paul Magarey, with the assistance of Bianca, is to submit a grant application to Nutrition ACT. The money would be used to employ someone (Mark, if we are awarded the grant) to research and compile nutritional information on a few hundred of the items that we stock. The information would take the form of notes on the food barrels in the co-op containing (along with standard nutritional information), for example, recipes that use the particular items. The Management Collective authorises Mark and Greg to sign the application.
- Australian Ethical: We have submitted a grant and will find out whether we are to receive it in September. It would be to employ someone for three days each week, for three months, to document and devise systems for all aspects of the running of the co-op. Mark would be employed, because he is The Oracle of Tofu.
New Flayer
Discussion (rather extensive, but resolved most wonderfully) regarding ordering of the co-op's supporters on the new new flyer, which will be sent to Alan and printed in time for the party next week.
Our Name
Greg spoke to Dr. Brok Glenn in the Vice Chancellor's Place. Dr Glenn is very supportive of us retaining the 'ANU' in our name, but just asks for a formal link between the co-op and the ANU to be re-established. Being associated with the ANU Nutrition Society (which is a society of the ANU Students' Association) is not enough. Greg has been talking to the SA executive, who are supportive of us finding a way in which we can affiliate with the SA, taking into account the fact that our (Co-operative's Act) constitution can't agree with the SA's constitution. It is to our advantage to remain affiliated with the ANU, for future support, and to maintain continutity. We are still able to trade as whatsoever we may like (i.e. The Co-operative Food Shop, as we decided at that GM sometime ago). We hope to
- remain registered as The ANU Food Co-operative, Ltd., and
- trade as The Co-op Food Shop.
The flyer (see above) will reflect this nomenclature.
Mark's Holidays
Mark will, now, cease to work seven days a week! This we command! We love Mark, and shouldn't want to annoy with imperatives, but more than that we don't want him to burn out. So, Mark will have his first weekend off for a very long time. Rest up, dear friend!
Looking to the future: Mark will take some weeks off soon, and should he get sick during this time he will then be on sick leave, and so won't come back to work until he had [however many weeks it is] of good, healthy, holiday.
Co-op Staffing
We can now afford to employ staff for seven days per week. Mark will drop back to his (nominally standard) five-day week, and Nat and Dioni will continue to do one day each. If Mark is able to take up the employment offered from any of the grants that we are currently hoping for (see above), then we will need to employ another person. Employing a café person is separate from this (see below).
Café
We will employ (probably Marina, Dioni's sister) one-and-a-half days per week at a rate of $17/hour.
- Tuesday 10:30AM–6:30PM
- Thursday 2:00PM–6:30PM
We will make sure that whoever takes the job is very clear that it may not last, because of the slightly tentative situation with our Licence To Occupy. The party next Sunday will be Marina's first shift. Café staff will be responsible for making cakes and maybe salad wraps as well as coffees etc., and, if time permits, should learn about co-ordinating and other general shop administration.
Licence To Occupy
A letter will be sent to Bart Meehan of ANU's Facilities and Services to clarify the situation regarding us selling medium-risk foods (like coffee).
Pay Rates
We will increase the Manager's pay to $20/hour, and assistants' to $17/hour.
acton.act.au
We will express our interest in this domain name with the auCD.
SIFE
The Students In Free Enterprise who have been 'helping' us with systems and advertising have done very little. They entered some competition, and lost. They have now seemingly wandered off, away from the Co-op, and we have gained little from their involvement.
Meeting closed: 9:13PM. Next meeting date not talked about. But we'll all be at the party, so we'll probably talk about stuff then. We'll have some wine, and laughter and smiles and good food will run the Co-op…
