The Co-op prizes itself on having the very best strategies for minimising waste of all kinds... saving the planet while minimising costs for all its memebers at the same time.

But saving waste minimisation isn't just for the co-op. So here is a space for all co-op members, and the wider community, to share tips and tricks about cutting down on resource usage... You can add to this page!

How we do it

For a great summary of our waste-saving tchniques here at the co-op, check the summary we wrote up for the 2006 Nowaste Awards.

composting

There are some great tips for that on the Toronto city council site: http://www.toronto.ca/compost/index.htm

Water Usage

Simple things like..... Catching shower water in bucket before the water heats up. Water the garden in the early morning or evening. Wash potatoes and other vegetables in bowl then put the water on your garden.

Cooking

When cooking rice, especially white rice, you can have it cooked perfectly every time and not burn the pan: put rice in and fill with water to a couple of centimetres over the rice; put on full heat till boiling (only a couple of minutes); take off heat and wrap in woolen blanket or jumper; leave for as long as you like -- it'll stay warm and be perfectly cooked and save lots of electricity!
